If you’ve driven around our beautiful Lake Country lately, you already know the vibe is shifting fast as folks move to Putnam County in droves. I recently dove into our local county commission packets and the local newspaper to see what the future holds for a project everyone is talking about: the upcoming Stillwater Lake Oconee neighborhood.
A Shift to Community Living
Located along Scott Road just off Highway 44, this massive residential project covers over 165 acres of land. The county recently cleared the path to rezone the entire layout from a commercial space into a residential planned unit development. The approved first phase will blend standalone single-family homes, townhomes, and apartments into one cohesive community. While that initial stretch is off to the races, developers are already seeking final approval for the remaining phases to bring the neighborhood to a total of 387 units.
I recently flew over the area and captured its current state from above. I love its proximity to the new Surcheros or everyone's favorite, the Silver Moon! Once we have sidewalks along Highway 44, the prospect of walking to dinner and shopping from Stillwater has a lot of appeal!
Local Growth and Growing Pains
The economic ripple effect is already real, with local businesses like Epic Innovations relocating to Scott Road to capture the incoming demand. AT&T is also laying high-capacity fiber-optic lines to ensure the entire neighborhood is instantly remote-work ready. However, a project this size brings natural growing pains, and many neighbors have voiced valid anxieties about traffic bottlenecks approaching Highway 44. Even with a new traffic light being installed at Scott Road, density remains a major talking point. GDOT's planned improvements for Highway 44 will also factor into the impact to Stillwater, Scott Road, and the surrounding area.
My Perspective
From my point of view, Stillwater's location is a massive benefit, sitting perfectly positioned to offer convenient access to the best of Lake Country's shopping and recreation while keeping commutes manageable. I'm incredibly excited to learn more as the developer formalizes its final plans and layout designs. More than anything, our community has a pressing need for homes at an attainable price point. While premium custom waterfront estates command millions, we desperately need attractive options for the local workforce, business owners, and young families looking to plant roots here. Stillwater feels like a great step forward for Putnam County's modern vision.
