Rain or Shine - The Ultimate Rainy Day Guide to Lake Oconee

May 27, 2026

A chance of rain, or even torrential downpours, couldn't dampen our spirits this Memorial Day weekend. In fact, it served as the perfect reminder that the Lake Oconee lifestyle isn't just about being out on the water. There is so much to see, do, and eat here, even when mother nature doesn't entirely cooperate. If you find yourself looking at an overcast forecast, don't pack your bags just yet. Use our weekend as the ultimate blueprint for how to turn a rainy holiday into a fantastic lake getaway.

Friday: Pampering, Provisions, and Property Potential

We kicked off the long weekend by welcoming our out-of-town guests the best way we know how, with great food and a little self-care. We started with lunch on the patio at Cafe 44, where Ali and Jes made everyone feel right at home. Afterward, we split up for a bit to maximize our time. One of our guests enjoyed a relaxing manicure next door at New Beginnings Nail Salon & Spa while the rest of us ventured to the nearby Publix to stock up on weekend snacks.

Before heading to dinner, we took our guests on a tour of our own house in main Reynolds, which is currently undergoing renovations. It was a blast because the walkthrough sparked so many creative design ideas for our friends, and they turned around and offered some incredible feedback for our project too. We capped off the evening with a fantastic chef’s dinner at The Overlook at Great Waters. This clubhouse easily features the best view on Lake Oconee, overlooking the pristine golf greens with the water stretching out beautifully behind it.

Saturday: Comfort Food and Real Estate Scouting

The weather on Saturday morning was definitely a bit iffy, so we made the executive decision to leave the boat at the dock and explore the local scene by land. We started with a great breakfast at Eatonton’s Waffle House, which is home to truly the nicest staff on the planet.

Later that afternoon, we spent some time taking a look at some amazing houses for sale around the lake. It happens every single time we have guests visit, they experience the area, fall completely in love, and immediately want to buy a home here.

Saturday night brought us together with eight of our friends for dinner on the patio at the Creek Club. It turned into one of those strange but beautiful evenings where it was raining but the sun was wide out, making for a uniquely gorgeous Lake Oconee moment.

Sunday: Lakefront Dining, a Movie, and Last-Minute Showings

We enjoyed a very relaxed morning with a round of golf on The Landing’s golf course on Sunday morning. We kept it to just nine holes because it was a relaxing holiday weekend after all.

The threat of rain persisted into Sunday afternoon, but that did not stop us from enjoying an outdoor lunch at the Lakefront Pavilion on Lake Oconee. With unobstructed views of the lake, plenty of dock space to arrive by boat, live music, and good food, it is always a crowd-pleaser.

As the heavy clouds began to build, we decided to escape the weather and catch a matinee at Parkside Main 8. If you haven't been upstairs, the second level features luxury seating and a full bar.

As a dedicated local realtor, I spent time during the movie productively multitasking by arranging last-minute tours for two key properties my guests had expressed serious interest in. Immediately after the credits rolled, we went to look at both houses. They were beautiful properties, and one of them is already a very strong contender.

We wrapped up the holiday weekend by squeezing in a classic lake tradition between the showers: We thoroughly enjoyed the concert on the lawn at Great Waters to celebrate Memorial Day, catching the live music just before yet another round of storms moved through.

The Takeaway: This weekend was living proof that there is plenty to do at Lake Oconee, even when the skies are overcast and rain is in the forecast.
