The Loss of The Landing Clubhouse & Esse

October 11, 2026

On a day when most of us were glued to the news, anxiously tracking Hurricane Isaias and the devastating potential it held for homes across Georgia, Alabama, and Florida, it was surreal to see disaster strike right in our own backyard.

On Saturday October 10th, a fire consumed The Landing Clubhouse at Reynolds Lake Oconee - home to the beautiful ESSĒ restaurant. ESSĒ was the signature restaurant of The Landing community at Reynolds Lake Oconee.

As reported on Atlanta's News First, WSB, and other Atlanta networks, the building is a total loss. Text messages from friends throughout the community confirmed the sad news as it happened.

Update 10/12/2026: A reporter for ANF read this blog post and invited me to share a few words on camera. Here is the interview:

While there has been no official determination yet, early signs point to a malfunction in one of the gas fire pit tables. Controlling a rapidly expanding propane fire would have been a monumental task.

In the face of this tragedy, the silver lining is the incredible response of the Reynolds employees. From my understanding, they did an exemplary job of attempting to extinguish the flames while urgently prioritizing everyone’s safety. Thanks to their quick actions, not a single person was harmed.

A Decade of Memories

For me, and for so many others in the neighborhood, the loss of this building is sad. When I moved to Reynolds in 2015, the clubhouse was a very different place. Its aesthetic felt like a time capsule, with a simple restaurant offering brunch, lunch, and dinner services throughout the week. We always looked forward to seeing the friendly faces of the staff, and our favorite spot was out on the back patio, taking in that gorgeous view sweeping down toward the golf course with the lake in the distance.

It was a place of personal milestones, too. We hosted a casual luncheon there the day after our wedding in 2016, surrounded by family and friends.

When Reynolds Lake Oconee renovated the space a few years ago, they elevated it to something truly special. They introduced ESSĒ, a restaurant styled with a trendy, big-city flair. It featured a fantastic central bar, indoor and outdoor seating, exceptional service, and excellent food. It was the beating heart of The Landing, and losing it is a heavy blow that has the whole neighborhood talking today.

Looking to the Future

I have always tried to view a loss like this as an eventual opportunity. There are so many incredible directions Reynolds can take when considering how to rebuild this property. If I were asked, I would suggest leaning into the evolving demographics of the community with one of these concepts:

The Inn at Reynolds Lake Oconee

This is my idea - not from any neighborhood officials.

Rebuild the space with a dedicated, standalone restaurant and a separate, distinct bar. Above them, create an expanded luxury inn. The previous clubhouse had (I believe) seven or eight recently renovated, beautiful rooms for rent. Expanding on that concept would create a premier boutique destination for visitors and guests of residents.

The Modern Community Hub

This is also my idea - not from any neighborhood officials.

Reimagine the space as a restaurant, bar, and coffee house combined with a premium co-working space. The Landing naturally draws in many of the younger families with kids, meaning there is a high concentration of working parents in this specific area. A dedicated, beautifully designed co-working space would be an incredible amenity for work-from-home parents, while also giving kids a great place to do their homework in the afternoons.

Regardless of what the plan becomes, The Landing remains one of my favorite parts of Reynolds Lake Oconee. While I am saddened to see this chapter close so abruptly, I am genuinely excited to see how this special space will be reborn.
